Summary of Faculty Strategic Plan
2005-2011

The Faculty of Forestry, University of Khartoum has developed its five year Strategic Plan on a participatory approach based on national strategies, forest policy and programs and the current national and international environmental issues.
The plan is composed of four key areas, their objectives and means of achievements.
Key Area 1: Eminent Education Programs
Key Area 2: Quality Research
Key Area 3: Contribution to community development
Key Area 4: Inter-institutional Relations

Overall Goal
Sustainable Development of forestry and natural resources sectors

Vision
To be a leading education, training and research institution in forestry and related natural resources fields in Africa for the sake of their conservation and sustainable management to guarantee the flow of products and services for present and future generations.

Mission
The mission of the Faculty of Forestry is to generate and disseminate knowledge for the stewardship of forests and related natural resources, and the sustainable use of their products and services through teaching, research and outreach activities.

Key Area 1: Eminent Education Programs
Goal: To produce competent graduates capable of contributing to the development of forestry and related sectors

Objective 1: Spectrum of the faculty is widened with special areas of concentrations (options)
Means and activities
1.1. Review the existing structure of the faculty with a view of exploring potential options (areas of specialization) through consultation with stakeholders

Objective 2: Curricula are developed and continuously revised to keep pace with resent scientific development and community needs
Means and activities
2.1. Establish a permanent curricula committee
2.2. Develop curricula through consultation with stakeholders through

• Workshops

Objective 3: Delivery of programs to students is improved
Means and activities
3.1. Train staff on improved methods of teaching/learning through
• Periodic workshops
• Seminars
3.2. Strengthen practical and tutorials
• Establish and rehabilitate standard labs
• Train teaching assistants and technicians
• Establish university forests
• Establish demonstration plots
• Strengthen linkages with public, private and development organizations
3.3. Develop relevant teaching materials (notes, manuals...)
3.4. Establish modern, specialized library and continuously supply books and periodicals

Key Area 2: Quality Research
Goal: Conduct scientific research that will contribute to technological and managerial advances in forestry (and related sectors)

Objective 1: Young staff members of the faculty and related institutions are qualified in conducting scientific research
Means and activities
1.1. Develop and conduct post-graduate programs leading to Diploma, M.Sc. and PhD degrees.
1.2. Train staff on standard/modern research methods
1.3. Strengthen linkages with public, private and development organizations

Objective 2: Research environment/facilities are improved
Means and activities
2.1. Establish specialized research laboratories/facilities
2.2. Continuous supply of periodicals and reference books
2.3. Establish connection with relevant specialized electronic libraries

Objective 3: Research projects are developed, shared and funded
Means and activities
3.1. Train staff on writing competitive research proposals through
• Workshops
• Seminars
3.2. Establish contacts/links with interested funding organizations
3.3. Establish links with research institutions and develop joint research programs

Objective 4: Staff members of the faculty are producing research results relevant to the prevailing problems in forestry and related sectors
Means and activities
4.1. Identify priority research areas using participatory approaches through

4.2. Establish integrated research teams representing forestry, other natural resources and environment

Key Area 3: Contribution to community development
Goal: To strengthen the links of the faculty with the community for effective contribution to the livelihood of rural and urban communities

Objective 1: Community awareness is raised
Means and activities
1.1. Conduct awareness and sensitization workshops for policy makers
1.2. Produce extension messages through manuals, posters, brochures
1.3. Establish demonstration fields
1.4. Conduct field days (in university premises, schools, affected areas ...)

Objective 2: Partnerships are established with stakeholders
Means and activities
2.1. Identify potential partners through surveys (farmers, communities around forests, communities affected by deforestation and desertification, urban communities)
2.2. Develop and conduct joint activities with the various groups
2.3. Monitor and evaluate links and activities

Objective 3: Curricula are linked the to community needs and problems
Means and activities
3.1. Develop curricula through consultation with stakeholders through
• Meetings with experts

• Workshops
Objective 4: Research is linked to community needs and problems

4.1. Identify priority research areas relating to community development

Key Area 4: Inter-institutional Relations
Goal: To strengthen inter-institutional relations to enhance research, education, and development partnerships (Faculties, GOVs, NOGs and CBOs)

Objective 4.1: Partners from related intuitions are participating in the faculty activities
Means and activities
1.1. Include partners from other institutions in the faculty board and other meetings
1.2. Invite partners in the delivery of the faculty teaching programs
1.3. Collaborate in the supervision of student research projects
1.4. Invite partners to present general lectures and seminars
1.5. Organize and spearhead annual scientific forums and meetings
1.6. Provide fellowships

Objective 4.2: Research programs are developed and shared
Means and activities
2.1. Identify potential partners
2.2. Develop collaborative projects to bridge gaps with the communities
2.3. Identify and conduct joint research programs
